Photo Of The Day

This is the second picture that I took with my camera after getting it. I had talked about and researched for years about getting a camera and getting into photography. I finally pushed myself and got an awesome camera set up.

I took a trip with my riding buddies Brian Campbell and Todd Berdick to Taos, New Mexico. It was in mid spring when we went so there was no one else there but us and a few park "leeches." It was a lot of fun sessioning the park. The lighting was amazing that day. There were breaks throughout the clouds letting just enough harsh light through to get some pictures like this one. I was using my fish-eye lens, just snapping pictures in the direction that they were riding. Only a few feet from Todd, timing and just right into the sun caught this. The contrast in this picture was perfect!

After catching this moment was something I wish I could have caught on tape. One of the kids that just hung around the park asked me if he could ride my bike. Behind me from where I was standing, taking this picture, there is a four foot quarter pipe on the edge of the park and in the flats there is a small pyramid then a ramp leading into the park. So we were set up at the top of the ramp and this little kid grabs my bike and I tell him to be careful -

"My bike has NO brakes."

"Oh yeah, no problem I got this,"  he said with a confident smirk on his face.

I watch him set up at the top of the ramp and start pedaling into the flats. He must have had this "Oh yeah I got this, I'll show these guys what I got," internal pump as he barreled towards the lip of the quarter. Pulling up on the handle bars and getting just the front wheel off the ground, he cruised down the back side of the pyramid.

In these kinds of alternative sports, like BMX or skate boarding (you can ask anyone who is an avid participant of these about this) - the split second before wrecking can last forever. Realizing the situation and seeing how the next instant will pan out, whizzes through your mind. How can I make this not hurt or hurt less? Where should I throw the bike or should I even throw it?  It's like watching yourself in a slow motion movie.

So this kid is maching down the backside of the pyramid, looks up and see's the quarter pipe eight feet in font of him.  I was watching from behind him, but at that moment I could only imagine the slow motion movie and the wide eye in panic. He hits the quarter pipe and flies into the air frozen and just endows into the deck. I nearly collapsed laughing! This brute of a kid gets back up and rolls back over to where I was sitting. It was so difficult to contain myself as he looked at me with this forced smile and said, "Dude I just threw up a little bit over there."

One great trip and some epic shots to break in my camera. What a great start to kick off my photography!

M.I.A.

I want to apologize for not updating in so long - but it's been for good reason: my wife and I are expecting a baby! We're having a little girl, due in September. My wife has had a somewhat rough pregnancy (lots of morning sickness and whatnot) so we have been busy coping with that. Expect lots and LOTS of photos of this little one come fall! :)

However, I'm trying to get back into the blogging world and will try to update this more frequently. Lately, I have finally been able to get out and do some more photo shoots and I will try to post some photos from those in the coming weeks. Also take note that I have been uploading pictures to my Facebook page, so check there if you'd like to see them sooner.

I also thought I would post a picture every so often (it could be a picture from long ago or a more recent shot) and I'll write a story about it to follow.

And finally, I conjured up a new watermark for my work and I think it really fits the style I'm going for. I'm quite content with it.

So stay tuned for more photos, updates, and news!

Welcome!

Welcome to The Hallow Design! It is a business who consists of myself - an aspiring photographer who is just now getting started as a professional. I have been taking pictures for five years now. I started because I had an urge to capture beauty, sometimes in fleeting moments. I then brought my camera whenever I was out and from that, I started to actually build quite a nice portfolio. After friends and family noticed my work and liked it, they asked me to take pictures of them. That led to more projects....which added more to my portfolio. I have done:

- Nature ~ Flowers, mountains, lakes, trees, skies
- Structure ~ Railroad tracks, abandoned buildings, cars, trucks, bikes, motorcycles
- Events ~ Local concerts, BMX riders, dances, parties, recitals: singers and dancers
- People ~ Senior portraits, family photos, engagement pictures, prom photos, photo shoots on location
- Animals ~ Catching funny and sweet moments
- Self ~ Self portraits in a number of locations (using a timer)

I created a page on Facebook to show curious friends and family members what I love to do. Eventually, people started asking if I sold my prints or not. After taking some time to reflect, I decided to pursue this as far as I could take it. I sold a number of prints and have since started building a website to store all of my photos and to put them on display. Because of that success (and inquiries on if I could shoot certain events), I am proud to announce that I will now be conducting services, as well as continuing to sell prints! The name of my business is The Hallow Design, which I picked because my photography is an escape for me - a sanctuary. It is sacred and that's what "hallow" embodies for me

I decided to start this blog for a number of reasons, the most important being:

* Showcase my photos
* Post updates
* Share news
* Personal insights
* Creative thoughts and ideas
* Photo shoots

I hope you will follow me along for this ride. This creative journey is so fulfilling for me. I love being able to express my love for life through a passion that is an artistic process: photography. I want to thank all of you who have been supportive of me and my goals and dreams. It is the reason why I have come so far with this business. So stay tuned and keep following my blog!
